Standing controversy has lengthy history at Byrd

Standing Section :
To make Byrd Stadium the toughest place to play in the ACC, we need as many fans as possible to be standing and loud throughout the game in support of their team. Unfortunately, outside of the student section, there is no place in the stadium where fans can support their team in this way without conflicting with other fans that disapprove of such supportive behavior. Therefore, it is essential for fans to have a place in the stadium where they can stand and support their Terps.
According to the Vertical Alliance Sports Marketing Newsletter, like-minded football fans at the University of Notre Dame successfully petitioned the athletic department to designate a section of Notre Dame Stadium as standing-only, where fans stand and cheer throughout the entire game, just like the students. Demand for “seats” in this 1,700-seat section of the stadium called Alumni Alley has been tremendous, according to the newsletter.
We need a similar section, or sections depending on demand, at Byrd Stadium beginning with the 2003 season. Currently, Section 7, adjacent to the band and students is among the liveliest and may be the most logical place, so fans can coordinate well with the students. The section should continue to be sold on a season ticket basis and will be a rousing success with proper marketing and outreach.
